News and Knowledge

OAR aims to stimulate autism research through the Applied Research Competition. We encourage aspiring and experienced autism researchers alike to submit applications. If you are interested in submitting a proposal in 2020 for a grant starting in 2021, OAR has the tools you need. We recently produced a new video with an accompanying preparation tip sheet that can be referenced throughout the application process.

The Panel Discussion Video features a panel discussion among three of OAR’s Scientific Council members: Peter Gerhardt, Ed.D., Scientific Council chair; Joanne Gerenser, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Scientific Council vice chair; and Paul Shattuck, Ph.D., Scientific Council member. In it, they answer questions such as:

  • What would you consider an innovative study?
  • What suggestions do you have for inexperienced students?
  • What are some of the more common mistakes you see applicants make on an application?

Michael Maloney, OAR’s executive director, serves as the moderator.

The Proposal Preparation Tip Sheet lists questions and tips that help applicants develop a well-rounded proposal. Examples include:

  • How would this intervention scale and be paid for once implemented?
  • Be very clear about knowing your terminology: “population,” “sampling,” “sample,” and “recruitment.” Use these terms correctly.
  • Understand the differences between constructs and measures. How will you measure your main constructs? Clearly describe your key measures, where they came from and/or how they were developed.
