With the rising inclusion of autistic students in general education settings, the challenges of managing a classroom can be more complex. An Educator’s Guide to Autism, one of OAR’s Life Journey Through Autism guides, provides educators with a plan for teaching an autistic child in the general elementary classroom setting. Uniquely, this guidebook includes a six-step approach for teachers to use to prepare for the inclusion of an autistic child in their classroom.

The plan includes information about:

  • Preparing to have a student with autism in the classroom
  • Communicating and collaborating with the parents and/or guardians of an autistic student
  • Supporting an inclusive classroom environment
  • Collaborating with a student’s IEP team

The guide also offers relevant information and background about autism, including changes in diagnostic terminology, culturally accepted terms, and legislative history.
