News and Knowledge

It’s fun for students to learn about their classmates using the Kit for Kids peer education program. Now that fun is more easily available! For the first time, OAR’s Kit for Kids activity workbooks can be ordered as paperbacks. First created as a digital download in 2013, the activity workbooks are organized by grade levels (K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8). Each workbook has eight to 12 colorful pages of activities and readings that expand upon the information presented in the What’s Up with Nick? story to reinforce knowledge retention.

The workbooks contain a wide array of activity prompts, including:

  • Small/whole group activities
    • Read aloud supplemental reading passages.
    • Identify characteristics that you and other classmates share.
    • Brainstorm ways to make the classroom more sensory-friendly.
  • Individual activities
    • Complete a crossword puzzle.
    • Draw a picture or write a paragraph about Nick.
    • Respond to reading reflection questions.

The purpose of the Kit for Kids program is to promote more inclusive classrooms where students with autism are respected and valued. Since 2012, the program has impacted more than 125,000 students and taught them about their peers with autism.

The workbooks are free to download (click the images above), and the paperback copies are available in sets of 20 for $50 through OAR’s online store. School administrators and teachers are highly encouraged to apply for an Autism Education Grant to receive the activity workbooks and complete Kit for Kids set at no cost.
