News and Knowledge

OAR is currently accepting applications for the 2021 OAR Scholarship Program. Applicants can apply to either the Schwallie Family Scholarship or the Lisa Higgins Hussman Scholarship until Monday, May 3, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Each offers $3,000 scholarships to students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (DSM-IV/5 criteria) pursuing full-time, post-secondary, undergraduate education in the United States.

The Schwallie Family Scholarship supports students attending two- or four-year universities. The majority of Schwallie applicants fall into the four-year category.

The Lisa Higgins Hussman Scholarship supports students attending two-year universities; life skills or postsecondary programs; or vocational, technical, or trade schools. Hussman applicants typically make up the pool of talented students with greater daily support needs who plan to attend programs that assist in skill-building, job readiness, and other transition-related skills.

Both scholarships require completion of an online application that includes three short essay questions, date of diagnosis, and proof of enrollment. Schwallie Scholarship applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit one letter of recommendation from a non-relative. Hussman Scholarship applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation, one from a parent or guardian and one from a non-relative.
