December 13, 2001 | Founded

The Organization for Autism Research was founded to advance applied research and deliver practical resources that improve the quality of life for autistic individuals and their families. From the beginning, we have focused on solutions people could use in daily life, not just research for research’s sake. That mission has guided every program and resource since.

2002 | Applied Research Grant launched

The Applied Research Grant program was launched to fund research with direct, real-world benefits for the autism community. It filled a critical gap by prioritizing studies designed to lead to usable outcomes. Over time, this work has helped drive innovation in evidence-based supports and services.

2003 | First guidebook released

The first guidebook, A Parents’ Guide to Research, was released to help families better understand autism research and use it to make informed decisions. Since then, more than 40 resources have been published to support autistic individuals and families from diagnosis through adulthood and beyond.

2003 | RUN FOR AUTISM launched

The RUN FOR AUTISM program was started to give supporters a meaningful and active way to raise funds for applied research and resources. The program built community while expanding OAR’s reach through races, events, and personal fundraising. Our runners have raised millions of dollars that have helped power our mission for more than two decades.

2004 | Graduate Research Grant launched

The Graduate Research Grant was introduced to support emerging scholars pursuing applied autism research. It strengthened the pipeline of future researchers while keeping the focus on practical outcomes. The program has helped launch careers and expand the field of real-world research.

2007 | Scholarship program launched

The scholarship program was launched to expand access to higher education for autistic students. It began with the Schwallie Scholarship and later expanded with the Hussman Scholarship in 2013 and the Synchrony Scholarship for Autistic Students of Color in 2021. In 2022, the Synchrony Tech Scholarship was added to support autistic adults pursuing technology-related courses or training to advance their careers.

2009 | Operation Autism launched

Operation Autism launched to support military families navigating autism, especially during relocations and deployments. The program addressed a unique need by offering tailored resources and targeted assistance for families facing additional barriers. It strengthened support for service members and helped connect families to tools they could use immediately.

2012 | What’s Up with Nick released

The What’s Up with Nick booklet was released to help peers better understand autism in a friendly, age-appropriate way. Inspired by a letter we received from a young girl who wanted to learn more about autism, it filled a real need for relatable peer education. The booklet evolved into our Kit for Kids peer education program, that is used to expand autism acceptance in schools and communities nationwide.

2016 | Hire Autism launched

Our Hire Autism program was created to meet a major need in the autism community: improving employment opportunities. The program helps autistic job seekers while also helping employers create more welcoming, inclusive hiring practices. It has helped open doors to meaningful work and increased awareness of autistic talent in the workforce.

2019 | Sex Ed for Self-Advocates launched

Sex Ed for Self-Advocates was launched to address a topic often overlooked in autism supports. It filled a major gap by offering clear, respectful, and accessible information for autistic individuals, families, and educators. The guide has helped promote safety, autonomy, and healthier relationships through education.

2020 | Peer Education Grant launched

The Peer Education Grant was launched to help schools and community organizations teach children about autism and build more inclusive peer relationships. By providing Kit for Kids materials and funding for educational activities, the program helps communities move from awareness to meaningful acceptance and inclusion.

2022 | Community Grant Competition launched

The Community Grant Competition was launched to fund practical tools and information resources that support the physical and mental health of autistic individuals. It centers community expertise by supporting autistic people, families, and organizations as resource creators and leaders.

2024 | Libby Library launched

Our Libby Library is a curated library of autism-related eBooks and audiobooks launched through the Libby, the Library app. This resource gives community members free access to popular fiction and nonfiction, clinical texts, guidebooks, and children’s books, all available on personal devices. It expanded access to trusted information and stories for both leisure and learning.

2025 | Healthcare Toolkit launched

The Healthcare Toolkit was released to help autistic individuals and families navigate medical visits with more confidence and less stress. It addresses a major barrier by offering practical strategies, communication supports, and planning tools. The toolkit helps improve healthcare experiences and promotes better outcomes through understanding and preparation.
