News and Knowledge

As the introduction to OAR’s “Life Journey Through Autism: A Guide to Safety” notes, autism presents its own set of vulnerabilities for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) of all ages. In some cases, the person’s behaviors and traits may make them more susceptible to everyday safety concerns. In other cases, the characteristics of autism create the vulnerability. No matter the cause of the vulnerabilities, safety is an issue for people with autism and their caregivers.

The guide provides readers with the tools and resources they need to develop or strengthen their safety plans. Designed with families, schools, and first responders in mind, it offers practical guidance and tools on life-threatening issues that arise across the lifespan.

The guide covers topics such as:

  • Wandering and development
  • Interaction with law enforcement
  • Bullying
  • Physical and sexual safety
  • Internet safety
  • Money safety

OAR has distributed more than 7,000 copies of “A Guide to Safety” to homes, classrooms, fire and police departments, autism organizations, and libraries since its release in 2014.
