Meghana Shetty and Lindsay Goodman began internships at OAR in January. Goodman will be with OAR until the end of April while Shetty will stay until the end of May.
Shetty is a 2014 Northwestern University graduate who is currently applying to graduate schools. “Having studied neuroscience and psychology in college, I was immediately attracted to OAR’s mission to ‘use applied science to answer questions that parents, families, individuals with autism, teachers and caregivers confront daily,’” she says. “I couldn’t wait to get started!”
A junior at George Washington University, Goodman is enrolled in a five-year Bachelor of Science/Master’s program in public health. During her time with OAR, Goodman will be focusing on the communications and outreach leading up to April’s Autism Awareness campaign through OAR’s social media outlets, newsletters, and blog. “I am passionate about autism research and helping to connect families with the resources they need,” she says.
Shetty will also work on outreach, focusing her efforts on the Autism in the Schoolhouse program and helping with the new volunteer initiative. “I will be promoting the Kit for Kids guide in elementary and middle schools and recruiting volunteers who want to help educate their communities about autism,” she explains.
Goodman is looking forward to applying her public health knowledge to the work being done at OAR. “I will enjoy performing the research required to write updates for the newsletter each month. This is an incredible opportunity because I am able to explore the information that is out there and help others find the information they really need to succeed.”
Shetty is excited about the chance to get to know “the inner workings of an autism nonprofit and learn how reliable resources are distributed through communities.” She also looks forward to interacting with a variety of professionals, educators, autism specialists, and volunteers to accomplish OAR’s outreach goals.”
