News and Knowledge

think-safety-logo-300x150 copyThink Safety, the companion Web site to OAR’s “Life Journey Through Autism: A Guide to Safety,” is a place where members of the autism community can ask questions, give answers, offer advice, and share experiences through a series of message boards and forums. The site’s Safety Resources page offers additional assistance with a list of evidence-based resources.

The safety resources provided on Think Safety include and expand upon the same guidance, advice, and information contained in A Guide to Safety. OAR regularly updates and maintains Think Safety with the latest in autism safety information. For example, information about The Wallet Card Project was recently added. The project provides free wallet cards to facilitate communication between people with autism and law enforcement.

The resources include autism safety videos, worksheets, and other safety resources as well as life-saving tips, strategies, and tools to help families strengthen their safety plans. The page is organized by type of resource, allowing families to easily access the resources that best suit their needs. A list of other organizations and initiatives working specifically to further safety for the autism community is included as well to ensure that community members can find the information they seek.

Topics cover the entire lifespan, including:

  • Water safety and fire safety
  • Interaction with law enforcement
  • Wandering and elopement
  • Physical and sexual safety
  • Bullying prevention
