Have you ever thought about participating in autism research? The OAR Web site lists opportunities to participate in ongoing studies at universities and foundations across the country. The page includes where the research is being conducted, a brief description of the study and its direct benefits, and whom to contact with questions. While many studies require in-person visits, others simply ask participants to take an online survey.
For additional opportunities to get involved in research, individuals with autism and their families can participate in the Interactive Autism Network (IAN), a partnership of the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Simons Foundation, Autism Speaks, and the National Institutes of Health. When participants sign up, they complete online study questionnaires regarding autism diagnosis, treatment, services, and other related topics. Participants will also periodically receive special notices about local, regional, and national studies looking for families like theirs.
Before searching for opportunities, review the Participating in Research page of the OAR Web site for frequently asked questions and information about ethics. OAR’s first resource guide, Life Journey through Autism: A Parent’s Guide to Research, is also an excellent starting point.
