Race Recap: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

Top triathletes from around the world took over the streets and waters of San Francisco for the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday, June 9. Triathletes embarked on a challenging 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green, an 18-mile twisting bike ride through the Presidio, and an 8-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and up the infamous 400-plus step Sand Ladder. To finish the race, athletes followed a path back under the Golden Gate Bridge, pass Crissy Field, and finish on the grass at Marina Green.
For the second year the Organization for Autism Research sent a team to make their attempt to escape one of the world’s most famous prisons as part of the TRI FOR AUTISM – Alcatraz team. The team exceed expectations and raised over $30,000 to support OAR’s mission. The team of Lawrence Dunning and Mo Dadkhah combined to raise $6,925
The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon is considered one of the most difficult triathlons in the world. That didn’t stop the TRI FOR AUTISM team from putting together an impressive performance. Anthony Avila was the first OAR finisher, finishing the race in a speedy 2:42:52! All of the TRI FOR AUTISM participants that made the trip to San Francisco crossed the finish line of this iconic race.
After another successful year at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon we are excited to see what next year’s team can do when we return in 2020!
