Abstract

This feasibility and intervention evaluation project has three primary aims.  First, in partnership with autistic individuals affiliated with AASPIRE, we will finalize the content of the PAUSE program. PAUSE is designed to be an online, six-session class for autistic adults that addresses depression, anxiety and self-compassion. PAUSE takes a neurodivergence-embracing perspective. PAUSE will be facilitated by one autistic expert in suicide prevention, and one non-autistic professional with psychology expertise. Next, this project will pilot test PAUSE via a one-arm trial (pre- and post-test design).  We will assess the acceptability and feasibility of PAUSE with participants using mixed methods. Finally, we will use quantitative pre- and post tests to investigate changes in knowledge, attitudes and behavior related to depression, anxiety, self-compassion, social support, and quality of life. This research will position us to produce an evidence-informed curriculum to address a serious gap in low-cost and accessible services for autistic adults: the lack of support for those with depression, anxiety and low self-compassion.
