We, the Organization for Autism Research (OAR), are looking for persons with business, management, and workplace experience to serve as Hire Autism Navigators and help young adults with autism refine their resumes and/or cover letters.

We firmly believe in the ability of persons with autism to be successful in a wide range of jobs. Hire Autism provides online resources to help individuals with autism find meaningful employment. We also know that these individuals can use help in finding jobs and all that goes with it.  This is where Hire Autism Navigators will play a supporting role.  Navigators will use Google Docs to help to review and provide direct feedback on job seekers’ resumes/cover letters to ensure that they are polished and ready to send to employers. Resume/cover letter review combined with the use of our online resources will help these young adults navigate their job searches more effectively.

The expected volunteer commitment is 1-2 hours per week for 3 months. We expect that Navigators will review up to three resumes or cover letters during that time period.

The Navigator role is envisioned as a remote, technology-based, volunteer opportunity with face-to-face interactions conducted via web-based platforms. The ideal volunteer will have a record of success in his or her own professional career, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a commitment to Hire Autism’s mission, and the desire to serve as a positive role model.  Knowledge or life experience with autism is a plus in terms of understanding our job seekers, but it is not a prerequisite. Interested persons must have access to a telephone, Internet, a computer, and the capability for virtual communication.

Before training, we will ask prospective Navigators to schedule a brief phone call with an OAR staff member to answer any questions you may have and provide more information about our organization’s research and resources. Once selected, each Navigator will complete the online Hire Autism Navigator Training, a 4-hour curriculum delivered over a two-week span that will offer information about autism, supporting persons with autism, and the operational guidelines for serving as a Navigator. Upon successful completion of the orientation and a satisfactory background check, Hire Autism staff will match the Navigator with a Hire Autism jobseeker or self-advocate, who have specifically requested help.

Desired Qualifications/Requirements:

  • 10+ years leadership, management, HR, or related experience
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Experience as a business owner, hiring manager, or in HR, or similar
  • Competence in Google Docs, online searching and virtual communication
  • Excellent verbal, and written communication skills

Desired Intangibles:

  • Desire to help people in a meaningful way
  • Belief in the potential of all individuals to reach their fullest potential
  • Patience and perseverance
  • Strong sense of advocacy
