2021 Was a RUNaway Success | Organization for Autism Research

OAR News

A runner in an OAR singlet smiles as they run through Times Square during the NYC Half Marathon. As distance races slowly started to come back in 2021, the RUN FOR AUTISM team has been proudly representing OAR at endurance events across the country plus in London. After being disappointed by all the race cancellations last year, this year’s RUN team members have put the spirit, determination, and generosity of the autism community on full display — and their efforts have led to great success. Our team of 944 runners and triathletes joined forces to raise more than $550,000!

In April, the 2021 RUN FOR AUTISM program kicked off with the Active for Autism Virtual 5K and Kids Dash. Thanks to the 484 participants from the United States and abroad, the event raised an incredible $80,300.

In the fall, marathons began returning to in-person events. The RUN Staff was excited to see RUN FOR AUTISM represented at the Virgin Money London Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the TCS NYC Marathon. Our Chicago team of more than 75 runners, including longtime OAR runners, new team members and many amazing teams, raised close to $90,000 for OAR. The most amazing performance of the year goes to our TCS NYC Marathon team, which was, by far, the largest and most successful team for this race in OAR’s history. With 92 runners and over $211,000 raised, the RUN FOR AUTISM NYC Marathon team represented well at the 50th anniversary of this iconic race.

After all the training miles, long runs in the heat, support from friends and family, fundraising events, travel, and finally crossing the finish line, RUN FOR AUTISM team members from all of our events showed incredible spirit and hard work. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to give the RUN this awesome bounceback year!

The fundraising by RUN FOR AUTISM team members allows OAR to break new ground each year, and we’re excited to be heading into some new projects for 2022. Will you resolve to RUN FOR AUTISM in 2022? Check out our event schedule for upcoming races and learn more about OAR’s Active For Autism 5K, coming up in April. Email RUN staff with any questions.

Congratulations and thank you again to our inspiring team, and to all, have a happy and healthy holiday and New Year!
