20 Years of Supporting the Autism Community | Organization for Autism Research

OAR News

December marks an extra special milestone for OAR as we celebrate our 20-year anniversary! We are so excited to have the opportunity to thank each and every OAR supporter for all you have done for us over the years. Whether you have been with us since the beginning or just discovered us this year, we appreciate your support. Let’s take this opportunity to look back at all you’ve helped us accomplish in the past two decades and then look forward to what you’ll help us achieve in the future.

In 2003, OAR released A Parent’s Guide to Research, the first of what are today 10 resources in the Life Journey Through Autism series. The series addresses topics ranging from safety concerns at home to navigating the special education system and transition planning. As one autism parent said, “I found the guides for transitioning to adulthood and post-secondary education extremely valuable. Not only is it a useful guide for the parents, but literally a handbook that my autistic son can turn to when moving to a college campus. These guides are very thorough and best of all have practical, real-life solutions to the unique challenges my son is sure to face.”

As we aim to keep these resources valuable and current, we periodically update them and release fresh new versions. Last year, we released an updated version of that first parent’s guide, and earlier this year, we updated A Guide for Transition to Adulthood. This new version features our first interactive pdf guidebook, which allows readers to complete activities and tasks directly in their downloaded guidebook. This is especially timely and useful in our increasingly interactive and digital world.

As we reflect on OAR’s first 20 years, it’s remarkable to see that we have:

These achievements would not have been possible without your support. We thank you for all you have helped us accomplish over these last 20 years.

Now, as we look to the future, OAR continues to build on our strengths by offering evidence-based resources to benefit the autism community. Our next offering will focus on information, tools, and tips for adults diagnosed with autism later in life. The toolkit will help them understand the diagnosis and what it means for them and, in some cases, their families. The toolkit will be the first in a new series of resources specifically designed to support autistic adults, a much-needed complement to the support we offer families, caregivers, and educators. With your continued support, we know we can accomplish this and more.

We are proud to be one of the few autism charities ranked both as a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and a top-rated nonprofit by Great Nonprofits. You can donate with confidence, knowing that $0.77 of every dollar we spend goes toward the mission. Please donate via credit card online or mail a check to Organization for Autism Research, 2111 Wilson Blvd., Suite 401, Arlington, VA, 22201.
